The History of the Laryngectomy

This site was visited 12726 times during 2007 and had 65533 page views.

There's bound to be many histories relating to Laryngectomies and I've been in search of some. I'll put any references I can find on this page so if you can find some more just email me and I'll put it below so we can all share.

History of the Laryngectomy
by Jack Henslee

He believes it all started with a dog in 1829! by H. Albers. It wasn't incredibly successful as the dog only lived 9 days but it was a start. I don't want to enter into the argument about 'Animal Testing' but I personally am grateful to that dog. I'd like to think that it did have laryngyl cancer but I guess it probably didn't.

Laryngectomy History
By the Oto-Rhino-Larnyngology guys in the Netherlands

They say it all started with the first laryngectomy, reported to the German Surgical Society in 1874 by Gussenbauer, being performed on a 36 year old religious instructor by Theodore Billroth (1829-1894). He was born in the same year that the dog died!
